Last weekend's first InErGa in Leipzig marked the emergence of a new conference for narration experts in games. The event by Narranauten at MacroMedia gathered game writers and narrative designers for a day of talks, workshops and networking.

With the debut of the new narrative design conference InErGa – Interaktives Erzählen in Games (Interactive Narration in Games), Leipzig association Narranauten has started a new focal point for narrative designers and game writers in Saxony this weekend. On Saturday, 20 September, the first InErGa, limited to 50 experts and 50 junior talents, took place at MacroMedia University of Applied Science in Leipzig. In two tracks, experts from several walks of narrative professions held six talks and two workshops throughout the day.

Introduced by organiser and co-founder of Narranauten Marcus Klöppel, the event was opened with a digital keynote by author and Federal Chairwoman of the Association of German Writers Lena Falkenhagen. Afterwards, talks from Tim Schuchert, Gregor Müller, Marcus Klöppel, Jana Reinhardt, Falko Löffler and Yvonne Vaziri-Elahi led the audience through relevant topics like barks, writing in detective games, dialogue systems and more. Finally, the programme ended with two extensive workshops led by Barbara Mendes-Timmermann and Wolfgang Walk about narrative gameplay design. Leading into the evening networking was a live podcast held by Falko Löffler, who apart from his work as a game writer and translator is also the host of German adventure game podcast Benutze Ohr mit Lautsprecher (Use Ear with Speaker).

In a statement to GamesMarkt, Marcus Klöppel explains: "With InErGa, we are trying to create a place where all experts can meet and exchange experiences in an interactive way. The field of narrative design is a relatively new profession. Therefore, professional exchange is extremely important in order to find standards, establish best practices, and describe new approaches."
