Another one of the bigger German indie studios has fallen under the economic pressure: Osmotic Studios from Hamburg, makers of Closer the Distance and the Orwell game series, are effectively done making games. Daniel Marx, co-founder and CEO of Osmotic, shared so on LinkedIn with his official resignation as CEO. He said that most of the time had been let go over the course of the last months. The reason for this is that the last game, Closer the Distance, had not sold well enough to sustain the production of the next game.

“2024 has been a troublesome year for the entire game industry, and it has been no different for Osmotic Studios. Although our last game, Closer the Distance, was received very well and was nominated for multiple prestigious awards, it did not sell well enough to keep the company afloat. Neither pitching new projects nor our search for commissioned work was fruitful, and so, at the end of last year, we had to make the very difficult decision to let go of most of our team. I’m very glad that – to the best of my knowledge – everyone got a new job immediately. Still, I feel that I could have and should have done better. I’m sorry that I let you down. I would have loved to make many more games with all of you”, Marx said in his LinkedIn statement about his retirement as Osmotic CEO.

Marx didn’t clarify if Osmotic Studios would be officially closed down. GamesMarkt has reached out for comment.
