In Scott Pilgrim EX, the members of Sex Bob-omb, Toronto's 'coolest' band in 20XX, are kidnapped and their instruments stolen. Meanwhile, three rival gangs — demons, vegans, and robots — have taken over the city. Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers and their motley crew of friends and ex-partners must battle their way across the city — and even back in time — to save the band, the city and the world.

The game's story takes place after the Netflix series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Scott Pilgrim EX features a new storyline co-written by Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley and the team at Tribute Games, as well as original music by the American indie chiptune band Anamanaguchi. The anime's co-creator, BenDavid Grabinski, also acted as a creative consultant.

The game is a side-scrolling brawler with light RPG elements, reminiscent of classic arcade games. It is similar to Ubisoft's 2010 game Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game. There are seven playable characters, each with a unique set of moves inspired by their appearances in the franchise. Joining Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers are former villains such as Robot-01, as well as several of the Evil Exes, including Roxie Richter, Matthew Patel, Lucas Lee and Gideon Graves.

Each character embodies a different combat archetype and can be made stronger by purchasing upgrades. However, these upgrades make the characters overpowered too quickly, meaning that most fights become trivial. This is unfortunate, given that the combat system is fluid and responsive, with easy-to-use combos and weapons that can be found in the environment, such as baseball bats, demonic rods and turnips. However, the complexity of the combat skills remains fairly straightforward. Those who want more or more complex battles are better served with Absolum.

It's also worth mentioning that Scott Pilgrim EX allows players to freely explore the city. Encountered NPCs can give quests with objectives located across Toronto, offering gameplay-changing rewards as players try to save the band and the world. However, there could have been a few more locations. All of this is garnished with many pop culture references and presented in Paul Robertson's colourful pixel art style with top-notch animations, which fit the source material very well.

Scott Pilgrim EX was developed and published by Tribute Games under licence from Universal Pictures. The Montreal-based studio was founded in May 2011 by former Ubisoft employees Jonathan Lavigne and Jean-François Major. Both Lavigne and Major worked on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the Game Boy Advance, as well as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and other titles. The studio released its first title, Wizorb, for the Xbox 360 in September 2011. This was followed by Mercenary Kings, Curses 'N Chaos, Ninja Senki DX, Flinthook, and Panzer Paladin. They are also the developers of the million-selling Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (2022) and Marvel Cosmic Invasion (2025), both of which were published by Dotemu.

Scott Pilgrim EX was released on 3 March 2026 for the following platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch/Switch 2. It is priced at €28.99.

Conclusion

Scott Pilgrim EX is an outstanding audiovisual trip down memory lane that is superbly playable, but could have offered a little more content.
