Konami is serious about reviving the Silent Hill franchise, having released a new game in the psychological horror series for the third consecutive year. However, Silent Hill: Townfall introduces a first-person perspective for the first time, whilst retaining the defining elements of the series.
The revival of the Silent Hill franchise is likely to be met with great satisfaction at Konami Digital Entertainment. The 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2, developed by Bloober Team, has been played by over six million people, including those using subscription services. The latest instalment, Silent Hill f by NeoBards Entertainment, which was released in 2025, has also sold over two million copies. While Silent Hill f was the first instalment of the psychological horror series to be set in Japan, the upcoming Silent Hill: Townfall shifts to an entirely different setting. Developed by Screen Burn Interactive — the Glasgow-based creators of Stories Untold and Observation — it is set to be co-published by Konami and Annapurna Interactive.
In Townfall, Simon Ordell returns to the Scottish island of St. Amelia in 1996, intent on 'putting things right'. There, he finds an apparently deserted town shrouded in heavy fog. In this full-length, self-contained psychological horror game, Simon begins to uncover fragments of his resurfacing past. Unlike earlier games in the series, Townfall is played from a first-person perspective, resulting in a far more personal experience and an even greater sense of horror. However, the game remains true to the series' defining themes of mystery, tragedy and loss. It is designed as a tale of introspection, loss and consequence. Fear grows from quiet moments and the shadow of Simon's past, but also from encounters with enemies.
With only a limited set of weapons and tools at his disposal, including the CRTV — a pocket television that can be used to tune into unstable signals (a reimagining of the iconic radio) — Simon must explore, evade and survive. Threats, story fragments and clues can be picked up by tuning the CRTV nearby. It picks up radio signals from monsters and shows their positions, even through walls. By solving narrative-driven (logic) puzzles closely tied to these fragments, players can relive past events and catch glimpses of everyday life in the town, while remaining aware of the overarching narrative.
The atmosphere is intense and creepy, although there are too few different types of enemy. Much like in Alien: Isolation, the gameplay relies heavily on sneaking and hiding, with the CRTV serving as a key tool alongside other audio cues. It's often best to avoid enemies or wait until they've moved on. However, players can also throw objects, such as bottles, to distract the creatures. If spotted, the only option is usually to flee and hide. Stealth is an important part of the gameplay, though it can sometimes feel unfair due to poorly placed checkpoints and an element of trial and error. Players have access to very basic melee weapons and a limited supply of firearms and ammunition. However, the loud use of firearms can often attract even more opponents. As fights become more frequent, the distinct lack of variety quickly becomes apparent. Just as with the first-person perspective, the game's focus on stealth represents a slight departure from what the series is known for.
The English-language cast includes Jovan Adepo (The Odyssey, The 3 Body Problem), Terry O'Quinn (Lost) and Kezia Burrows (Observation). Meanwhile, a fully dynamic soundtrack by Pilotpriest builds tension. Akira Yamaoka is not on board.
Silent Hill: Townfall was developed by Screen Burn, an independent game development studio based in Glasgow, Scotland. The studio specialises in creating story-driven experiences. Founded in 2015 as No Code, the studio has developed titles including Stories Untold (2017) and Observation (2019). The game is being published by Konami Digital Entertainment in collaboration with Annapurna Interactive — an unusual partnership, though Annapurna is renowned for its unconventional and atmospheric storytelling games, including Outer Wilds, Storyteller, What Remains of Edith Finch, and Mixtape. Konami Digital Entertainment is the core company of the Konami Group and develops content for mobile devices, consoles and card games. It is best known for franchises such as eFootball, Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Castlevania and Contra, as well as the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game series. With Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, developed in partnership with Evil Empire and Motion Twin (creators of Dead Cells), Konami is set to release a new 2D Castlevania action-exploration game on 15 October 2026.
Silent Hill: Townfall is released on 24 September 2026 for PlayStation 5 and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store). It will be available in two editions: a Standard Edition priced at €49.99, and a Deluxe Edition priced at €59.99, which is available digitally only. The Deluxe Edition includes an alternative outfit, a digital art book, a digital soundtrack, and 48 hours of advanced access.

A fresh scenario and first-person perspective make Silent Hill: Townfall an exceptionally atmospheric psycho horror.
