Date Everything!
How exciting dates with the fridge, front door, smoke alarm or laundry basket can be is revealed in Date Everything!, developed by Sassy Chap Games and published by Team17. The house is full of potential partners, while an impressive cast of voice actors bring the creative characters to life.
Date Everything! brings a new twist to the genre. In this sandbox dating simulator, the protagonist is replaced by an AI after only one day at a new company, leaving them with time on their hands. However, a mysterious stranger sends an unusual gift: magical glasses called 'Dateviators', which bring everyday items in the house (and much more) to life and make them dateable. The dreary-looking house immediately becomes much more attractive through the glasses. So it's like wearing rose-tinted glasses. Players walk through the house in 3D, searching for obvious and well-hidden dateable objects, which then come to life in the form of anthropomorphic 2D portraits like those in a visual novel - whether it's the door, the vacuum cleaner or the shower. Every datable object has its own story, background, and characteristics, and could potentially become a lover, friend, or enemy.
There are 100 fully voiced, datable characters, each with branching dialogue leading to at least three endings, and over four hours of music, with a unique theme for each character. The game's scope is also evident in its 11,000+ hand-drawn images, 1.2 million words, and 70,000 voice lines. Each character has a punny name and a surprising amount of emotive depth. The writing is mostly engaging and captivating, and often very funny. Although not everything hits the mark, the majority is extremely well done. By the way: Potentially 'difficult' or sensitive topics (sexual language, toxic relationships, trauma, etc.) are preceded by a trigger warning, allowing this content to be skipped, while still enabling to determine the relationship status afterwards.
The characters are brought to life by a stellar cast of voice actors, including Felicia Day, Matthew Mercer, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, Steve Blum, Ben Starr, Neil Newbon, Ashley Burch, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Troy Baker and Travis Willingham, among many others. For example, Travis Willingham voices Luke Nuke'm the microwave, while Matthew Mercer voices Chance the D20 dice. Two characters who emerge from the laundry basket, Harper and Dirk, are voiced by Laura Bailey and Johnny Yong Bosch respectively. The game is only available in English and it would probably be difficult to translate due to the many puns, sarcasm and allusions.
The Dativator grants five interactions per day (and only one per character), so players have to choose who to "date", especially since the process of dating is quite extensive. This can sometimes make things drag on a bit. Additionally, players can give characters gifts if they notice something in the dialogue and then bring them an item from their house. Ultimately, a relationship develops which can be based on love, friendship or hate. While playing, players collect attribute points in five categories: Smarts, Poise, Empathy, Charm and Sass (S.P.E.C.S.), which usually reflect the item's personality. These attribute points unlock special dialogue options. And in the in-game phone app, players can collect information about all kinds of characters. The motto is: gotta date them all!
Behind Date Everything! is Sassy Chap Games, which was founded by three voice actors in 2018: Ray Chase, Robbie Daymond and Max Mittelman. The game started as a fun project, and over the next four years, the team slowly grew and developed a vertical slice that caught the attention of publisher Team17. Since late 2022, this part-time project has become a full-time endeavour, and the company now has over 50 employees. The publisher is UK-based Team17, which belongs to the everplay Group, along with Astragon Entertainment and Storytoys.
Date Everything! is set to launch on 17 June 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, Switch and Xbox Series X|S. Physical boxed editions of the console versions will follow later.
