Atari has acquired Transport Tycoon in an agreement with the games' creator Chris Sawyer. This is the latest in a series of strategic acquisitions by the company.

Transport Tycoon, the iconic business simulation, has been acquired by Atari. "We are honored that Chris has entrusted us with Transport Tycoon and our team is committed to both honoring and advancing his groundbreaking creation," said Atari Chairman and CEO Wade Rosen. The purchase price is an undisclosed figure. The original DOS version was released in 1994. Ports to Mac, PlayStation and Sega Saturn followed. The title was ported to mobile in 2013. The game still has a passionate community, which created OpenTTD, an open-source remake and extension of Transport Tycoon Deluxe.

The concept of the game is still very popular today, for example Train Fever and Transport Fever by Urban Games from Schaffhausen, and the upcoming Industry Giant 4.0 by Don vs. Dodo and Toplitz, all of which are comparable business simulations.

"Atari will seek to expand digital and physical distribution, potentially develop new titles or content, and explore brand and merchandising collaborations as part of a long-term plan to preserve and expand this classic sim," the company said. Atari is also the publisher of Chris Sawyer's 2004 title Locomotion (a spiritual successor to Transport Tycoon) and the RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise.

Atari has been very active over the past few months. The company has acquired the Intellivision brand, revived Infogrames as a publishing label and taken over Rollercoaster Tycoon 3.
