Original Article from April 3 2024:

On Thursday, 4 April 2024, the crowdfunding campaign for "Friedrich Ebert - The Road to Democracy" will be launched on the Spieleschmiede platform. The analogue card game has a serious game angle and looks into the Weimar Republic’s democratisation process. The game is developed by Playing History, video and analogue game developer from Berlin with a focus in serious and impact games. Publisher of the game will be Ostia-Spiele from Wolfsburg.

"Friedrich Ebert - The Road to Democracy" is based on the serious game of the same name published in 2023 by the Reichspräsident-Friedrich-Ebert-Gedenkstätte Foundation, which is currently nominated for the German Computer Game Award as "Best Serious Game". For their work, the studio Playing History itself is currently also nominated as Studio of the Year at the German Computer Game Awards 2024.

Dr Martin Thiele-Schwez, one of the game designers and Managing Director at Playing History, emphasises the importance of this project: "Understanding the history of democracy is crucial to grasping the importance of democracy in today's world. For us at Playing History, 'Friedrich Ebert' is not just a game, but a project close to our hearts that helps to deepen this understanding and protect our democratic values."

Heike Risthaus, from the publisher Ostia-Spiele, adds: "After experiencing the enthusiastic response to the digital Ebert game and seeing how effectively it is possible to impart knowledge through play, it was clear to us as a publisher that we also had to make this experience accessible to players of analogue games."

"Friedrich Ebert - The Road to Democracy" has a minimum funding target of €5,000 on the Spieleschmiede crowdfunding platform for analogue games.
