US Video Game Industry Revenue Down One per Cent in 2024

In 2024, $58.7 billion (€55.8 billion) was spent on computer and video games in the US, almost one per cent less than the previous year (2023). Hardware sales in particular fell by 25 per cent, while Call of Duty topped the content charts ahead of a football game that wasn't Madden.

By far the largest share of consumer spending was on video game content, which will total $50.64 billion (€48.15 billion), an increase of two per cent compared to 2023. This is the second-highest figure in US history, only 2021 was higher at $52 billion. "2024 content spending growth across the mobile, non-mobile subscription and the PC, cloud and non-console VR segments offset an 11% dip in spending on video game content for console platforms," writes Mat Piscatella, Executive Director & Video Game Industry Analyst. Data is from Circana (NPD) and includes mobile market information from Sensor Tower from 30 December 2023 to 4 January 2025.

Mat Piscatella‬: "Call of Duty was the best-selling video game franchise in U.S. full game dollar sales (excluding add-on content) for a record 16th consecutive year. (...) EA Sports College Football 25 finished as the #2 best-selling game of 2024, while ranking 1st on Xbox platforms. EA Sports College Football 25 is the best-selling sports video game in U.S. history (full game dollar sales, excluding add-on content)."

Video Game Hardware

Sales of video game hardware fell substantially, down 25 percent from $6.45 billion to $4.85 billion (€4.61 billion). PlayStation 5 was the top-selling console in the US in terms of both revenue and units sold. The Xbox Series ranked second in terms of revenue, while Switch ranked second in terms of units sold. All-digital editions accounted for 45% of all PlayStation 5 and 44% of all Xbox console units sold. "PlayStation 5 now ranks 3rd in lifetime hardware dollar sales in U.S. history, trailing only Switch and Xbox 360. The platform currently ranks 11th in lifetime unit sales," Piscatella‬ says.

Video Game Accessories

Sales of video game accessories increased by six per cent to $3.17 billion (€3 billion). The PlayStation Portal Player was the top-selling accessory in terms of consumer spending through 2024. In terms of units sold, the PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller Midnight Black tops the list.
