Combining tower defence gameplay with elements of classic RTS games without complex economic systems or time-consuming micromanagement, this is D.O.T. Defence from RattleAxe Games. It is designed for short matches lasting between 10 and 15 minutes.
D.O.T. Defence is a blend of tower defense and real-time strategy (RTS) games. While it is reminiscent of early RTS games from the '90s, its visual style is similar to that of cartoons in the style of Ren & Stimpy. Designed for fast-paced gameplay, it features short matches of up to 15 minutes with minimal resource management and little micromanagement. The main objective in each round is simple: players must protect their own headquarters and destroy their opponents'. The HQ and factories continuously and automatically produce units that march towards the enemy independently. As a player, the only interaction required with the troops is to draw a path for them to follow on the map, which can be cumbersome, especially on intricate maps. Otherwise, the troops act independently. It would be more practical to have one or more rally points here rather than having to draw the path oneself. The inability to select units directly can sometimes feel restrictive. Special abilities expand the strategic options.
The map is divided into sectors. Once an area has been conquered, defense towers can be built there, provided there are enough resources. However, there is no traditional resource gathering; instead, there is a logistics system. A supply truck departs from the player's HQ to deliver building resources to occupied areas, which are indicated by small boxes. These resources allow the construction of factories, sandbags (for defense) and various towers, each of which is highly effective against different types of units. For example, flamethrowers are effective against many small troops, while cannons are better against armoured units. Within the sectors, there are also buff zones that enhance the effectiveness of buildings placed there, though they also dictate where towers must be placed. Then there are also neuralgic points and bottlenecks (bridges) on the maps. Fundamentally, this isn't a game where playing defensively is viable; aggressive tactics against the opponent are required instead, which — after a calm start — tend to become rather hectic and chaotic. Fortunately, speeding up or slowing down the pace of these chaotic battles is possible. The interface is rather basic.
There is a story campaign comprising 25 missions, in which players experience the conflict over the energy source Chroma from the perspectives of three factions: the U.C.F. (traditional military force), Chromatech (zombie economy) and the Invaders (environmental transformation). The missions are fairly short and occasionally feature creative ideas, and players unlock new buildings, commanders, and more as they progress through the campaign. However, the difficulty level rises quite sharply after the initial stages. Other modes include the classic Skirmish (vs. AI), Wave Defense against increasingly powerful waves of AI enemies and the roguelike Endless War featuring procedurally generated waves and unique modifiers. Finally, there is the Global Domination mode, the biggest new feature introduced with the 1.0 release. Moving away from standalone skirmishes, players command their armies across a persistent map, managing resources and developing new technologies. It's similar to a 4X lite. Multiplayer mode is limited to local matches — 1v1, 2v2 or free-for-all couch co-op battles — with full gamepad support.
D.O.T. Defence is being developed by RattleAxe Games, an indie studio based in Vancouver, Canada. The studio was founded by AAA industry veterans who worked on Homeworld 3, as well as animators from TV productions such as Last Kids on Earth and Star Trek: Lower Decks. The team has over two decades of experience in production and direction. Their debut game, Void Conquest, was released on mobile in August 2020. D.O.T. Defence is their second game. They are also currently working on Shattered Mythos, an action-packed RTS/RPG hybrid with roguelike elements.
D.O.T. Defence was released on Steam Early Access on 15 April 2025. The full version was released on 11 June 2026, priced at $14.99, €15.00 or £10.50.
