E-Commerce in Europa hinkt der weltweiten Entwicklung hinterher, hat die EU-Kommission in einem offiziellen Bericht festgestellt.

Das E-Commerce-Geschäft in Europa hat sich laut einem Bericht der EU-Kommission zur Entwicklung der Informationsgesellschaft nicht so weit entwickelt wie erwartet. Der Verkauf von Waren und Dienstleistungen sei weiterhin voll in der Hand des traditionellen Handels, so der Bericht. Zwar sei die Zahl der Internetnutzer in Europa von März 2000 bis Juni 2001 von 36 Prozent der Bevölkerung auf 38 Prozent angestiegen. Der Zuwachs habe sich jedoch im Vergleich zu den Vorjahren verlangsamt. Die Kommission sorgt sich vor allem darum, dass Europa unterhalb des Niveaus der USA bleiben könnte. Auch sei weiterhin ein Nord-Süd-Gefälle spürbar; in nördlichen Staaten sei die Internetentwicklung weiter fortgeschritten als im Süden.
