Der japanische Telefonanbieter NTT DoCoMo sagt für den Mobilfunkstandard iMode in Europa einen ähnlichen Erfolg wie in Japan voraus. Allerdings sei dies von den angebotenen Inhalten abhängig.

In Japan ist der Mobilfunkstandard iMode weiter auf dem Vormarsch. Auf der Milia bestätigte der japanische Telefonanbieter NTT DoCoMo, schon knapp 31 Mio. aktive Nutzer der in Konkurrenz zu UMTS stehenden Technik gewonnen zu haben. Einen ähnlichen Erfolg könne iMode nach Ansicht von Takeshi Natsuno, Managing Director von NTT DoCoMo, auch in Europa haben. Allerdings sei dies ganz entscheidend von den Inhalten abhängig. Durch Nutzung von Java könne fast jeder Inhalte für iMode entwickeln. Als besonders erfolgreich hätten sich dabei Spiele herausgestellt. 74 Prozent der Kunden würden die neue Technik derzeit für Unterhaltungsinhalte nutzen.
