Bremen Also Supports Local Esports Club With €20.000 Each Year
Like Dortmund, Bremen also supports the local esports club Bremen eSports with 20,000 euros per year. This indirectly increases the pressure on Berlin to support esports not only at the municipal but also at the federal level, as promised.
Even though esports was not the focus of the joint press release of the Bremen parliamentary groups of SPD, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen and Die Linke, it had a signalling effect for esports in Germany. The press release was about Bremen's double budget for 2024 and 2025, which includes funding of 20,000 euros per year for the club Bremen eSports.
"We have been committed to the promotion and establishment of eSports in Bremen for six years. The fact that our efforts are now being supported by politicians is a great moment for us and for esports in the region. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the state of Bremen and the political groups involved, who have done so much for us. We also hope that the approval will send a signal and provide further support for esports in Germany," says Alessandro Bünnagel, one of the chairmen of Bremen eSports.
His co-chair Luca Müller adds: "We are aware of the responsibility that comes with the funding. With our current situation, it was not possible for us to create a permanent contact point for people interested in eSports. We are now focusing on finding a suitable clubhouse. This opportunity will bring us much closer to our goals of establishing esports as a popular sport and further developing the important educational work on opportunities and risks."
Just a few weeks ago, it was announced that the city of Dortmund in North Rhine-Westphalia will also support the local club (in German) Dortmund eSports with 20,000 euros per year. In the northernmost federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, eSports is already supported in various ways, and in NRW, for example, the licensing of eSports coaches is also supported. In an interview with GamesMarkt, the games-orientated Bavarian Digital Minister Fabian Mehring promised ‘further highlights from the esports sector’ for this year, without going into detail. Each of these actions at local or state level also increases the pressure on the federal government to finally fulfil its promises regarding esports, which have recently been stalled by discussions between the ministries involved. The situation in neighbouring Austria, on the other hand, is completely different. There, comprehensive funding has been launched for 2024. Austria is funding esports with 450,000 euros this year.
