Federal Agency for Civic Education holds Masterclass on Right-Wing Extremism in Games

The German Federal Agency for Civic Education bpb will hold a masterclass teaching 20 chosen game devs about preventing right-wing extremism and misanthropy in gaming. Workshops will be held at five event on-site in Germany.
The German Federal Agency for Civic Education, the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (bpb), will hold a Masterclass for game developers on the topic of “Recognising right-wing extremism, countering misanthropy”
The Masterclass is a practice-oriented training series for all people in the field of game development, regardless of role and experience. The masterclass is supposed to teach interested game devs everything they need to know about right-wing extremism, how it can spread in gaming and related online spaces and what they can do specifically to take action against structural discrimination, group-based misanthropy and ultimately right-wing extremism in their day-to-day game development work.
In four modules in June, September, October, November 2024 and a final event in February 2025, the 20 game devs who have successfully applied will receive further training from proven experts in the fields of extremism research, radicalisation prevention, media research and game development. The modules build on each other and accompany the participants from an overview of the big picture to a focus on their day-to-day work.
"The masterclass thus offers concrete added value for all participating game devs: they understand how group-based misanthropy and right-wing extremism jeopardise their games and communities and where they can implement cross-sector measures to offer an inclusive and safe gaming experience for everyone. The masterclass is also a great opportunity to network with other game devs and proven experts from a wide range of fields.", as the bpb states. It wants those who successfully take part in the masterclass to "be able to lead the way as multipliers in the games industry and play an important role in promoting a resilient, inclusive and democracy-enhancing games culture - and will receive a certificate attesting to their successful participation."
Registrations are open until April 30, 2024. After that, a jury will decide which 20 people will be able to take part in the Masterclass programme. The workshops will be held on-site in Bonn, Siegen and Hamminkeln.
