In its annual report for fiscal year 2025, Nintendo also announced its sales expectations for the Switch 2. The company aims to sell 15 million consoles by the end of March 2026. How does this compare to the Switch and PS5?

Nintendo Switch 2 will launch on 5 June 2025. According to Nintendo's official forecasts, the new console is expected to sell around 15 million units in fiscal 2026 - from April 2025 to the end of March 2026, or in ten months. However, the data does not indicate how many units will be available globally on the launch date or in the launch quarter. Switch 2 software sales are estimated at 45 million over this period.

For comparison, Nintendo Switch was released in March 2017, at the end of fiscal year 2017, when 2.74 million consoles were sold in a single month. In the following fiscal year (April 2017 to the end of March 2018), approximately 15.06 million Switch consoles were sold. So in 13 months, the Nintendo Switch has sold 17.8 million units. Excluding the last quarter, approximately 14.87 million Switch consoles were sold in the first ten months (March 2017 to December 2017). This puts the Switch 2 forecast roughly on par with its predecessor.

In the first four quarters following its launch on 19 November 2020, Sony's PlayStation 5 sold around 13.4 million units (in just under ten and a half months), albeit against a backdrop of supply issues in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. PlayStation 4 sales were at a similar level over the same period.
