Editorial
Six special issues. Nine gamescom dailys. Exactly thirty GamesMarkt issues, this one included.
That is how my balance sheet looks for the more than two and a half years of working as an editor at GamesMarkt. And when I think it doesn’t sound too much, I try to remember the around a thousand penned online news that come with the regular day by day reporting.
With this thirtieth issue now, my time at GamesMarkt unfortunately comes to a close. It has always been a blast and an honour to report on the politics and law of gaming around Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the whole of Europe for you, to showcase games from the smallest indies to the biggest blockbusters, to visit and report from gaming expos and trade fairs from Lisbon to Gdansk, from Hamburg to Vienna. To connect the academic world of game studies and game learning with the industry through the annual Working in Games special was always the highlight of my year, apart from gamescom of course, and I am happy that we were able to inspire so many lecturers, so many students and so many young game workers with the stories of unusual career paths and troves of information we gathered. I know for a fact that my esteemed colleagues will keep up bringing all this and more to you in the future. So while I move on, I can only give you the one best tip I picked up while working here: Stay reading GamesMarkt, there’s no better way to keep informed in the games industry. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and since we switched the long-running publication to English entirely, I’d say in all of Europe as well.
Before I get any more sappy, let me for the last time give you my recommendations for this issue. We are focussing fully on the coming year of 2025, honing in not only on the big releases to come, but also on the events not to miss. The highlight of these recommendations however are not what we report, but what you say: In the results of our traditional annual GamesMarkt industry survey, you, the workers of the games industry had your say. From the prospects on coming events through stunning proceedings that might happen in the coming year, we gathered your opinions in graphics and evaluations. Do not miss it, it’s only once a year!
Allow me to say it was a pleasure to inform you these last years. Signing off,
Pascal Wagner
