Hamburg-based Osmotic Studios has won the Animated Games Award Germany, which is endowed with 5000 euros, at the ITFS, beating nominees and winners of the German Computer Game Award.

According to the vote of the games jury, the life simulation game succeeds in "leaving an echo that lasts longer than the story itself. The different characters allow us to accompany the complex grieving process and experience in a wonderful way how much a single life affects others."

It was actually a bit of a surprise that Osmotic Studios from Hamburg won this year's Animated Games Award Germany with Closer the Distance. After all, the field of nominees was narrow and high-calibre. Rockfish Games with Everspace 2 and Critical Rabbit with Fall of Porcupine were among the nominees. Everspace 2 won the German Computer Game Award 2024 (Deutscher Computerspielpreis, DCP) as the best German game, while Fall of Porcupine was nominated for the same. The farewell game from Mimimi Games, Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, and Touch Type Tale from Pumpernickel Studio were also up for selection.

The Animated Games Award Germany is sponsored by MFG Baden-Württemberg and presented as part of the International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS; Internationales Trickfilmfestifal Stuttgart) in Stuttgart, where there has also been a game zone for years.
