Microsoft hat heute seine Next-Generation-Konsole Xbox in Japan veröffentlicht. Damit versucht sich der Konzern zum ersten Mal seit Atari als US-Unternehmen auf dem japanischen Konsolenmarkt durchzusetzen. Ein Event in Downtown Tokio, von Bill Gates und einem japanischen Rockmusiker eingeleitet, bildete den Auftakt für die Markteinführung der 34.800 Yen (rund 300 Euro) teuren Konsole. Insgesamt hat Microsoft ein Day-One-Shipment von 250.000 Exemplaren Xbox vorbereitet. Das Launch-Line-up umfasst zwölf Titel, darunter einige von japanischen Entwicklern entworfene Xbox-Spiele wie etwa Namcos "Dead Or Alive 3", das sich bereits in den USA als Bestseller erwiesen hat. "Japan ist für uns sicherlich der Markt mit der größten Herausforderung", sagte Hirohisa Ohura, Microsofts Managing Director Japan.
