With a spectacular debut and a global box office haul of $301 million, Warner Bros.' Minecraft film has topped box office charts in numerous countries, giving the film industry a much-needed boost. In Germany alone, 835,395 tickets were sold, generating nearly €9 million and securing the number one spot.

The Minecraft movie is now on track to break records both internationally and in Germany. No other film this year has had a stronger opening, neither in Germany nor in the United States. In the U.S., Minecraft grossed $157 million over its opening weekend, $13 million more than in all international markets combined. Globally Minecraft grossed $301 million at its first weekend.

According to industry magazine Variety, analysts had predicted an opening weekend gross of $70 to $80 million. Only a few projections suggested that the film might reach around $90 million. However, all of these estimates have now proven to be far off the mark. Even compared to the launch of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Minecraft is in the lead. The Mario film grossed $146 million in 2023 and was similarly underestimated by analysts at the time. Whether Minecraft will maintain its lead over the five-day period remains to be seen. Back then, Mario had earned around $200 million in the U.S. and $173 million worldwide, according to our sister magazine Blickpunkt:Film (in German).

In Germany, however, Minecraft has fallen short of Super Mario’s debut. The Super Mario Bros. Movie attracted 953,696 cinemagoers during its opening weekend, over 100,000 more than Minecraft managed.
