Galaxus Deutschland: New Offices and Continued Growth
The German division of Digitec Galaxus is moving into new headquarters within Hamburg at the end of September. At the same time, construction of its second logistics centre in Germany is continuing. All signs point to growth.
More space for further growth, the new property that Galaxus Deutschland (Galaxus Germany) will be moving into in Hamburg at the end of September fulfils this goal. The German division of Swiss online retailer Digitec Galaxus AG is moving within Hamburg, from Schützenstrasse to the 'My Falkenried' complex on Hohenluftchaussee. There is now enough space for the 60 employees at the German headquarters. In total, Galaxus employs 200 people in Germany.
A number that is likely to increase soon. The online retailer is currently building a second logistics facility in Germany to further optimise deliveries to customers. The site in Neuenburg am Rhein is due to be ready for occupation in 2025 and will complement the existing logistics site in Krefeld.
Both the relocation and the second logistics centre are designed to support further growth. According to the company, Galaxus Deutschland's turnover increased by 57 per cent to 286 million euros last year. "Galaxus will continue to grow significantly in 2024," says Managing Director Michael Stolle. In total, the group generated around 2.74 billion Swiss francs in 2023, 13.1 per cent more than in the previous year. This is equivalent to 2.86 billion euros at current exchange rates.
In terms of turnover, Digitec Galaxus is still miles away from industry leader Amazon, but the Swiss company is increasingly becoming a competitor, at least in some product areas and in the countries in which it operates. According to Statista, Digitec Galaxus already has a 32 per cent share of online marketplaces in its home market of Switzerland, ahead of Amazon, which has a 25 per cent share there. In Germany, however, where Amazon claims more than 50 per cent of the online retail market, it is far behind.
Digitec Galaxus was founded in 2001 by three young entrepreneurs as Digitec, an online shop for IT products and, a little later, consumer electronics. A second online shopping brand, Galaxus, was launched in 2012. International expansion began in 2018 with the creation of Galaxus Germany. Galaxus was launched in Austria in 2021 and is also available in Italy, France, Belgium and the Netherlands since 2023.
