Opus: Prism Peak is a narrative adventure game in which players control a weary photographer who is stranded in the Dusklands and travelling with a girl who has lost her memories. Developed by Sigono and published by Shueisha Games, the game tells a deep and moving story.
In Opus: Prism Peak, players follow Eugene, a 40-year-old former photojournalist turned café owner. On his way back to his hometown, an accident pulls him into the Dusklands: a quiet, surreal realm of fading light and sorrow. There, he is given his long-abandoned analog camera back and meets a mysterious young girl with no memory except that she must return to a distant mountain within this strange world. The two of them journey together through fragile landscapes and lingering memories, encountering spirits along the way. Each spirit reflects a different emotion, memory or lesson. These encounters reveal deeper truths about the Dusklands and Eugene's inner world. Meanwhile, a looming presence, stained red and black, stalks Eugene from the shadows. Players use photography to capture the fleeting landscapes, spirits and moments of this world.
Although the game is a narrative adventure in the style of Life is Strange, it is actually more of a modern visual novel with 3D exploration elements. Players explore the environment from a third-person perspective, engage in dialogue and encounter animal spirits whose fates often mirror Eugene’s own life. Self-reflection, memories, loss, regret and the theme of 'saying goodbye' are all given strong emphasis. The story and encounters with animal spirits are profound, cathartic and emotionally intense.
Photography plays a central role in the game, reflecting the close observation of the world by both the player and Eugene. Serving as both a tool and a metaphor, photography enables players to preserve fragments of memory, teaching them to let go and unearth the hidden stories of the Dusklands. Players use an old analogue camera to capture 'the perfect shot' by adjusting the framing, timing, exposure, focus and filters — all from a first-person perspective, as if they were looking through the camera lens. As they capture the surroundings, players understand the desires of each spirit and uncover the world's secrets. The photography system is not just an added extra, but a meaningful part of the story and exploration.
At the Sacred Firebowl, photos can be exchanged for camera upgrades or story details. During nightly nightmares, Eugene processes his experiences, with snapshots unlocking background sequences. To grasp the full scope of the story, a second playthrough is necessary. However, the game progresses at a slow pace, contains little action and focuses almost exclusively on the narrative, even if it sometimes lacks guidance. There are hardly any gameplay challenges or puzzles.
The game makes use of an anime cel-shading style, reminiscent of the works of Studio Ghibli and Makoto Shinkai. While the environments are stylised and atmospheric, the graphics are rather simple. However, this is offset by the strong artistic design and narrative depth. Voice-overs are available in English, Japanese and Chinese, and subtitles are available in German, English, French, Spanish and Korean.
