The Scouring
What might a modern RTS look like that draws inspiration from classics such as Warcraft II and III, while also introducing new ideas? The answer comes from The Scouring by Orc Group, which is already making a strong impression in the Early Access phase.
The Scouring is a real-time strategy (RTS) game developed by Orc Group. Released on Steam in Early Access in August 2025, it combines classic fantasy elements with modern mechanics. The focus is on the conflict between humans and orcs, with the typical RTS elements of base building, resource gathering and raising mighty armies. A day-night cycle enhances the game, in which both factions must defend themselves against increasingly strong waves of undead at night if the player chooses this option.
The game offers two modes. In classic mode, The Scouring is reminiscent of classic RTS games such as Warcraft 2. Players build a fairly compact base, gather resources with workers, assemble an army, research improvements, and explore the map. Neutral enemies attack regardless of whether players are humans or orcs. Units improve in battle, and this is presented in greater unit detail - ideally, players should keep these important units alive for as long as possible using healing potions. The range of units is traditional, featuring swordsmen, archers and cannons. Flying and naval units will be added later. The game plays out in a very classic way here, featuring some strong AI opponents and fast-paced gameplay. Despite its Early Access status, the game is already quite advanced and polished. It features configurable controls, game replays and a minimalist UI that provides an unobstructed view of the battlefield, as well as dynamic destruction.
As well as the standard mode, there is also a Hero Mode. In this mode, the game becomes an action strategy RPG. Here, the player controls a single hero, while the AI handles base building, resource management, and all unit-related tasks. Players then explore the map, gain experience and equipment, and can even descend into dungeons to become stronger. However, players can also use special abilities and magic, 'take' units with the hero ('Follow Me'), and teleport back to base, as the game ends when the hero dies and all the resurrection charms have been used up. This mode of play is completely different, resembling Warcraft III, particularly the bonus campaign 'The Founding of Durotar' with Rexxar.
The game currently has the following weaknesses: limited unit variety; inconsistent AI behaviour (sometimes too aggressive, sometimes too passive); and limited interaction options with the building AI in Hero mode. However, the developers intend to address most of these issues in Early Access.
The current version offers skirmish and multiplayer modes (free-for-all, team battles, also ranked) for up to eight players. However, the Steam Workshop is already integrated, meaning modding is possible right away. A story campaign will follow with the launch of version 1.0. Early Access is expected to last approximately 18 months. During this period, the following are planned: a campaign; an additional race asymmetrical to orcs and humans; flying units; naval units; additional map biomes (winter and swamp); gamepad support; more AI assistant and hero mode commands; UI improvements; additional hero items and activities; and multiplayer improvements.
The game was developed by former Saber Interactive developer Pavel Zagrebelnyy, who worked on Spintires and MudRunner. The Scouring began as one developer's dream to create the ultimate RTS. Orc Group was founded in 2024, and now an international team is working on the game.
The Scouring was released on 12 August 2025 for PC via Early Access on Steam. It is priced at €22.50. According to the plans of Orc Group, the price won't change even after Early Access ends.
The Scouring is the right choice for anyone looking for a classic real-time strategy (RTS) game. Although the campaign will only be available at the end of Early Access, the game already makes a great impression, despite its limited content at present. The foundation is strong, and the game even offers mod support.
