On the first day of its availability, Nintendo used the new Nintendo Today app for a major announcement, revealing the theatrical release date of the live-action Zelda film as 26 March 2027. Rumour has it that this could mark the beginning of a trilogy.

This has not been officially confirmed. The rumours originate from film insider Daniel Richtman, who reportedly has knowledge that all the lead actors are expected to sign long-term contracts covering the full production period of the trilogy. Filming of the first instalment is scheduled to begin in November 2025 and continue through to April 2026. The shoot is expected to take place in New Zealand.

Of course, these rumours remain unconfirmed. However, it would not be unusual to option the cast for the long term in order to avoid recasting for potential sequels.

What is confirmed, however, is that around 18 months after announcing the development of a live-action film, Nintendo has now set a release date: 26 March 2027. The announcement was made via the newly launched Nintendo Today app, through which the Japanese company aims to communicate directly with consumers in future. From Nintendo Direct to the anticipated Switch 2, the app is expected to deliver major updates. With the Zelda film announcement, Nintendo has signalled that significant news will be shared via this new channel.
