In Sephiria, players control a cute but brave bunny from Bunnyville. On the Day of Destiny, an ominous event strikes the town and all the villagers are slaughtered by a horde of demons... unless the player can stop them. The bunny (or bunnies in online co-op mode) must therefore save Bunnyville by fighting their way to the bottom of an underground tower containing various biomes. They must collect and upgrade artefacts along the way and defeat hordes of demons to keep the village safe.

Sure, the story isn’t the game's highlight - the pixel art style certainly is - but what's even better is the fast-paced top-down action-RPG roguelite gameplay. The combat system is highly fluid and reminiscent of the precise combat in Hades combined with the chaotic bullet dodging of Enter the Gungeon. The controls are excellent, and the incoming enemy attacks are visualised flawlessly without being too distracting. As players make their way down, they battle through various levels, choosing one of six weapons with numerous upgrade options and collecting artefacts and tablets to strengthen their character and unleash the most powerful synergies possible. The artefacts found have strong synergies with one another, allowing the creation of completely different and increasingly escalating playstyles. Each weapon has its own unique branches with over 200 upgrades and comes with a "Perfect Guard" (Parry) system, in addition to the universal dash for dodging. More than 60 enemies and 10 bosses await across six chapters.

Aside from the fast-paced combat, the strategic management of the inventory is essentially a game within a game. During a run, artefacts (items with passive effects) and tablets are collected. Tablets enhance all artefacts placed within a specific adjacent line or area. Since inventory space is limited, items must be arranged strategically, like pieces of a puzzle. However, bear in mind that rearranging them can be time-consuming. During runs, players can also choose which rooms to enter. After clearing each room, decisions must be made on which path to take next and, most importantly, which rewards to collect.

In addition to in-run progression, there's also meta-progression, which is typical of roguelites. If players die, they lose all the weapon upgrades and artefacts they have earned, but they keep the sapphires they have collected. These can be used in Bunnyville to unlock permanent upgrades or repair the village. This unlocks new non-player characters (NPCs), additional costumes, and, most importantly, permanent talents. These talents provide lasting bonuses, making each subsequent run a little easier. For those seeking an extra challenge, there's Hard Mode. Sephiria can be played online in co-op mode with up to four players, including the option to trade items and revive fallen companions.

Sephiria is being developed by Team Horay, an independent game studio based in Yongin, South Korea. This is their second game, following their debut title Dungreed, a 2D side-scrolling action game with roguelite elements and a pixel art aesthetic, which was released in 2018. Development of Sephiria began at the end of 2021, and the game was launched in Early Access on 3 April 2025. Over the course of almost 500 days of Early Access and 58 updates, the game has grown considerably. It now features six chapters, six weapon branches with over 200 upgrades, around 300 artefacts, around 70 tablets, over 30 potions, over 20 costumes, 18 hard mode elements, and support for 12 languages, as well as online co-op for up to four players.

Sephiria 1.0 was released on Steam for PC on 31 July 2026, priced at €14.79. There is an additional 40% launch discount.

Conclusion

Sephiria is a highly engaging and fluid action-RPG roguelite with plenty of upgrade options.
