The studio behind MultiVersus, Player First Games, has been acquired by Warner Bros. In addition, the publisher will be shutting down the mobile game Mortal Kombat: Onslaught after just under a year.

Player First Games, the studio behind MultiVersus, the free-to-play fighting game featuring numerous characters from Warner Bros. franchises, has been acquired in full by Warner Bros. Games. The acquisition sum was not disclosed. Player First Games will continue to operate under the leadership of co-founders Tony Huynh (Head of Player First Games) and Chris White (Head of Technology). Both will report to Carlos Barbosa, Vice President and Studio Head of Warner Bros. Games San Diego.

"We have worked with Player First Games over several years to create and launch MultiVersus, and we are very pleased to welcome this talented team to Warner Bros. Games," said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Games. "The bright and creative team at Player First Games adds to our extensive development capabilities."

Player First Games was founded in Los Angeles in 2019 and employs just under 100 people. Its first and only game to date is MultiVersus. "Our team is excited to join the Warner Bros. Games family, and we feel that this will be great for MultiVersus overall," Huynh said. "We are working to make the MultiVersus game experience the best it can be and having our development team integrated with the publisher is optimum for the players."

At the same time, Warner Bros. Games has confirmed that the mobile game Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will be discontinued in October 2024. This means that the game will have been on the market for just under a year. According to media reports, the team behind the game, which was developed at NetherRealm, has been disbanded. More than 50 people are affected.
