441 Successful Video Game Kickstarter Campaigns Raised $26 Million in 2024
In its new The Creative report, Kickstarter takes stock of 2024. A total of $706 million was raised for creative projects, but only a fraction of that went to video games. Tabletop games received eight times that amount.
Even if these figures are unlikely to determine the success or failure of an individual Kickstarter campaign, the crowdfunding platform’s review in the form of The Creative report offers some exciting insights.
Backers supported a campaign with an average of $116.32, which is 5% more than in the previous year. The most generous backer contributed $202,415 to 111 projects in total. By contrast, the backer who supported the most projects spent $28,523, distributing that sum across 2,053 projects.
It is also interesting to note that a total of $706 million was raised for creative projects on Kickstarter in 2024, with 35,512 projects launched. However, Kickstarter did not provide information on how many of these projects were ultimately successful.
This data is available for individual segments, though. It shows that the "Games" category is one of the most successful, with $270 million raised. However, this success is largely due to tabletop games rather than video games. Tabletop campaigns also had an impressive success rate of 80%. Of the 6,646 campaigns launched, 5,314 reached their funding goal, with a total of $220 million invested in tabletop games.
By comparison, video game projects received just $26 million from the Kickstarter community in 2024. While that may not seem like much, Kickstarter states that 2024 was the most successful year for video games on the platform since 2015. Additionally, a total of 441 video game Kickstarter projects were successful in 2024—more than in any previous year. Unfortunately, Kickstarter did not provide information on the success rate of video game campaigns.
The most successful Kickstarter video game campaign in 2024 came from Panthea Games. The studio raised a total of $2.9 million from 33,933 backers for My Time at Evershine – The Next My Time Tale.
