With its latest box office takings, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has now grossed over $312 million. This brings the cumulative box office revenue of the Sonic movie franchise past the $1 billion mark—a tremendous achievement, though another video game character managed to reach this milestone with a single movie.

That Mario, Sonic's long-time rival, reached the $1 billion mark with just one film is unlikely to bother Sega and its film partner Paramount Pictures. After all, the Sonic films are an exceptionally successful franchise, even by the standards of the film industry. And the $1 billion milestone is just the beginning. Far from plateauing, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continues to climb, currently standing at $312 million.

The first two films together amassed $725 million at the global box office, with an additional $181 million from video rentals and sales. When factoring in the entire revenue chain, the Sonic films could well achieve total earnings of over $1.5 billion—a remarkable accomplishment for the iconic blue hedgehog.
