Unbeatable is a rhythm-based adventure game that is as stylish as it is wild. It features both a story campaign and an arcade mode. Players are transported to a dystopian world where music is strictly forbidden. This is because music attracts dangerous monsters called 'The Silence'. Players take on the role of Beat, a pink-haired teenager and the lead singer of a band. Forming a band and playing songs is considered a serious crime here, which is why the police are constantly hot on your heels.

In Story Mode, gameplay is divided into two main areas - the narrative experience and rhythm gameplay. In the narrative section, players can explore the hand-drawn anime game world at their own pace. They can interact with other characters, accept quests, play minigames (both good and bad) and drive the plot forward. Despite a few rough patches, the game's charm and raw energy make up for it. Particularly impressive are the visuals, which are a mix of 3D environments and hand-animated anime characters. The pace of the story is a bit slow at the beginning, though. At launch, the game was buggy and unfinished, but the developers have since released patches, bug fixes and even an engine upgrade (Unity 6), improving the game's state.

As soon as the band starts a song, which could have happened more often in the campaign, or there is a confrontation with the cops for example, the game switches to rhythm gameplay mode. The control scheme is extremely minimalist. All that is required are two buttons (up and down) to fend off attacks and obstacles in time with the music. While the concept is easy to grasp, executing it at higher difficulty levels is really challenging, especially since the visual effects and camera movements intensify the experience. The musical genres are primarily pop-punk and Japanese rock, with some progressive rock and electronic dance music influences. That said, the type of music is, of course, ultimately a matter of taste.

There is also an Arcade Mode, in which players battle to the beat. This mode is available as a standalone experience, separate from the game's story mode. It features online leaderboards and over 80 base songs, available in multiple difficulties. This mode has its own progression system. Players can unlock all the songs by playing the narrative mode or by playing Arcade Mode exclusively.

In late 2017, Andrew Tsai and Jeffrey Chiao worked together on a video game prototype which would eventually evolve into D-Cell Games' debut work. At the start of the following year, the pair began working with other developers across the United States, and the rest of the core team joined the project. Unbeatable was publicly announced on 25 December 2018. The game's first official trailer was released in early 2020, and that summer, the team won the GDC Pitch Award. The game was launched on Kickstarter on 6 April 2021, reaching its funding target in under 15 hours and ultimately raising $267,402 (five times the minimum target) by the end of the campaign. A free episodic companion piece, Unbeatable [White Label], was released alongside the Kickstarter campaign and was downloaded over 360,000 times on Steam and Itch.io. After this, the game was out of the spotlight for a while, but development continued. It was re-revealed in summer 2024, now published by Playstack. It was written and directed by Andrew Tsai and RJ Lake, and produced by Jeffrey Chiao, Rachel Lake and Darryl Kay. A total of 40 people are credited in the game.

Unbeatable was released in December 2025 for €27.99 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The first DLC for the game, The Jamie Paige Content Companion DLC (€9.99), was released on 27 July 2026. It is a collaborative project with vocal synth producer Jamie Paige. This DLC includes 12 new songs, two playable characters (Jamie Paige and Chef Quaver), two stages and a new Challenge Folio featuring unlocks for additional Arcade Mode titles, menu palettes, end-game Star charts and more. The Nintendo Switch 2 version was scheduled to be released alongside the Jamie Paige DLC, but has been delayed due to the performance not being ready yet.
