Africa Games Week (AGW) 2025 has wrapped up on 4 December in Cape Town, and the numbers for the event are in. The expo area featured 20 exhibitors and attracted over 1.500 visitors. Additionally, 500 B2B guests were on site to matchmake, seek deals and connect.

Political Engagement for Games in South Africa

The most important political moment of AGW 2025 was the Flagship Policy Day, which convened representatives from the National Treasury, Provincial Government, and the Department of Communication and Digital Technologies (DCDT).

This resulted in a landmark announcement for South Africa: the DCDT announced the launch of a Gaming and Animation Advisory Committee. This new body is meant to secure structural support and stimulate economic growth in the South African gaming landscape. The committee will provide strategic guidance and advice to the DCDT on policies.

Finnish mobile giant Supercell has also announced an investment into the African continent, with a fund for African creatives. Deborah Mensah-Bonsu, Social Impact Partner, announced Supercell’s strategic commitment to the long-term future of the African games ecosystem through a new fund backing creative teams across the continent.
