The state of Baden-Württemberg is increasing its funding for games to a total of 1.2 million Euros. Minister Dr Hoffmeister-Kraut believes that gaming technologies are used in all sectors of the economy, far beyond the entertainment sector.

The volume of funding available for Games in Baden-Württemberg will increase again in 2024 when the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism (Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Arbeit und Tourismus) joins the programme. Together with funding from the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst), a total of 1.2 million Euros will be available for the Games BW funding programme in 2024, 100,000 Euros more than in the previous year. MFG Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg is responsible for games funding in the federal state under the name "Games BW".

Dr Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister for Economic Affairs, Employment and Tourism "Games technologies are used far beyond the entertainment sector in all sectors of the economy, from the automotive industry to mechanical engineering to medical technology and, of course, in the entire field of education and training. State Secretary for the Arts Arne Braun: "The promotion of games is an investment in the future viability of our business and digital location and, together with artificial intelligence and animation, is a flagship of Baden-Württemberg. At the same time, games are an important cultural asset and an exciting way of enabling cultural participation. It is therefore only right that our cultural institutions should engage with the medium, and that the state's universities and academies should offer specific courses of study."

The fact that the Ministry of Economic Affairs is now involved in the funding of games is important for the cross-industry perception of gaming technologies. In addition to purely entertainment games, the Ministry of Economic Affairs also wants to support digital games that are not exclusively related to the entertainment sector, but can be used, for example, for training or education and are considered to be particularly innovative.

MFG Baden-Württemberg offers further industry-specific funding programmes for games students and games companies. In addition to Games BW funding, the state agency supports the games industry through inter-university cooperation and the promotion of young talent, the Developer Boost start-up programme and GamesHubs in the state, regular networking events such as Open Stages Game BW or the Gamestate Festival Baden-Württemberg, the Games BW Players industry platform and "THE LÄND" booth at gamescom in Cologne.
