Politically speaking, dear readers,

gamescom has long been recognised in Germany. Yet the number of international politicians attending has also been steadily increasing for years. However, the fact that Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, is coming to Cologne in 2026 takes the event to a whole new level. Not least because, over the past two years, an increasing number of issues have emerged at EU level that are relevant – if not critical – to the games industry. It would be great if gamescom could also foster understanding in this area and promote dialogue between the industry and the political sphere.

EC Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen to Visit Gamescom

Henna Virkkunen will be visiting gamescom for the first time this year. As the European Commission's Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, as well as the Commissioner responsible for digital and frontier technologies, she will be taking part in the political opening.
