Switch 2 Boosts Nintendo's Financial Results, Six Million Units Sold in Seven Weeks
Despite supply problems in many countries, Switch 2 exceeded six million units globally in the seven weeks after launch. Over 95% of Switch 2 owners have purchased Mario Kart World. Consequently, the company's quarterly results are positive.
In the first quarter of Nintendo's fiscal year, net sales increased by 132.1% year-on-year to 572.3 billion Yen (~ €3.33 billion). Operating profit rose by 4.4% to 56.9 billion Yen (~ €331 million), while ordinary profit declined by 15.6% to 95.8 billion yen (~ €558 million). Profit attributable to owners of the parent company increased by 18.6% to 96.0 billion yen (~ €559 million). The number of annual playing users from July 2024 to June 2025 will be 128 million.
In the aforementioned quarter, sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 totalled 5.82 million units. Of these, 1.27 million were sold in Japan, 2.08 million in the Americas, 1.34 million in Europe, and 1.13 million in other parts of the world. The console launched on 5 June. Nintendo added that sell-through exceeded six million units globally in the seven weeks after launch. The company expects sales to continue at a strong pace. Nintendo: "Currently, demand for Nintendo Switch 2 is exceeding supply in many countries, and we regret the inconvenience this is causing our consumers. We will continue to strengthen our production and supply systems to deliver as much Nintendo Switch 2 hardware as possible." It is expected that 15 million Switch 2 units will have been sold worldwide by the end of March 2026. Nintendo has already sold more than a third of this number in the first month alone.
Sales of the Nintendo Switch declined by 53.5% year-on-year to 0.98 million units (total: 153.10 million). The console is now in its ninth year since launch, so a year-on-year decline in sales was expected, but it continues to perform "well". A total of 4.5 million Switch sales are predicted for the entire fiscal year.
Nintendo Switch 2 software sales totalled 8.67 million units, of which 1.76 million were sold in Japan, 3.31 million in the Americas, 2.42 million in Europe and 1.17 million elsewhere. 5.63 million copies of Mario Kart World were sold by the end of June. By the end of March 2026, it is expected that 45 million Switch 2 consoles will have been sold worldwide. Just yesterday, Nintendo broadcast a Direct: Partner Showcase, during which over 25 games were presented.
Sales of Nintendo Switch software declined by 20.4% year-on-year to 24.40 million units. As the Switch 2 can play Switch titles, people purchasing Nintendo Switch software include not only Nintendo Switch owners, but also Nintendo Switch 2 owners. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (+660,000 compared to the previous quarter) and Super Mario Party Jamboree are also mentioned as being strong sellers.
Digital sales in the first quarter decreased by 13.5% year-on-year, reaching 69.8 billion yen, and accounting for 59.3% of total software sales. This decline was mainly due to a decrease in sales of downloadable versions of packaged software and the effects of a stronger yen. Net sales from software bundled with hardware are entirely classified as hardware sales. Nintendo: "As a result, although bundled software such as Mario Kart World is included in the number of software units sold, the corresponding revenue is not recognized as software sales or digital sales."
Nintendo plans to release a variety of new titles for the Nintendo Switch 2. Donkey Kong Bananza and Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV were released in July. Drag x Drive and Kirby and the Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World are planned for release in August. Further releases include Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Rhythm Heaven Groove, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, Pokémon Champions and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment.
