Although somewhat overshadowed by Baldur's Gate 3, Solasta: Crown of the Magister, from the Paris-based studio Tactical Adventures, has gained popularity among many players. This CRPG was initially brought to life through a Kickstarter campaign, followed by community-driven Early Access. It was released for PC in 2021 and later for consoles. The sequel is now available in Early Access.

Set decades after the events of the original game, Solasta II transports players to the high-fantasy realm of Neokos, which is under threat from a dark force led by Shadwyn. As her tide of corruption spreads across the continent, a band of adventurers rises to the challenge.  Players will create their party of four adventurers, roll the dice and embark on a quest filled with strategy, magic and intrigue, where their decisions will have far-reaching consequences. The new system for group dialogues, in which characters interact based on their assigned personality traits, adds depth to the game.

"Players must lead the four adopted Colwall siblings through the unknown lands of Neokos, as they collide with divine legacies and mortal ambitions, on their quest to discover the truth their mother took to her grave." - Tactical Adventures

Combat takes place in tactical, turn-based mode, and Ready Action is also possible. This allows players to prepare an action in advance and execute it when the time is right and certain conditions have been met - similar to the Overwatch function in other tactical games.  All characters can be customised with unique skills and abilities, and multiclassing is an option too.

True to its tabletop roots, Solasta II builds on Tactical Adventures' combat design by implementing the 2024 SRD ruleset, which provides D&D's core mechanics under an open licence. This enables third parties to create, publish and monetise their own content without paying licence fees to Wizards of the Coast. The implementation of the rule set is striking, and the game remains even more faithful to the source material than Baldur's Gate 3.

Alongside an expanded narrative, a 3D world map, cinematic visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5 and tactical combat, Solasta II features a notable cast of voice actors, including Amelia Tyler (Baldur's Gate 3, Hades 2), Ben Starr (Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Final Fantasy XVI), Devora Wilde (Baldur's Gate 3, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33), and Ellen Thomas (Arcane, Doctor Who).

"With Neokos we wanted to craft a world that feels wonderous but fully grounded. A place where every encounter leads to a deeper story, where every detail belongs to a rich and intricate narrative web." - Xavier Penin, Game Director at Tactical Adventures

Solasta II was released on 12 March 2026 on PC via Early Access for €39.99.

The Early Access release version includes a the opening portion of the campaign covering the majority of Act 1, with a maximum level cap of 4. Players will be able to create a party, with four fully player-controlled characters shaped through appearance, background, personality, and class choices. Although the character creation options are very diverse, it's still clear that this is an early access version. This is partly because the character facial models could be improved, and partly because the cutscene animations still look a bit clunky. There are also four different ancestries to choose from – Dwarf, Elf, Halfling and Human. Character creation will start with six classes, 13 subclasses and four ancestries, with more to come with new EA updates.

And players can explore part a of the interactive World Map, which is still in the early stages of development. This is a hex-based world map, where explorers will find hidden encounters, timed events, unmarked areas, and some of the toughest combat clashes via random elite boss spawns. Last but not least, the Early Access version features fully voiced dialogue.

During the Early Access period, Tactical Adventures plans to release several major updates, including online co-op multiplayer (Q3 2026), additional playable classes and ancestries, and extra locations, monsters and quests. "Our aim with the 1.0 version of Solasta II is to increase the level cap to 10 and conclude the main questline, as well as adding many new classes, ancestries, locations, spells, encounters, magic items, characters and monsters as well as several additional secondary quests on top of the existing Early Access updates," say the developers. The second act is scheduled for the end of the year and will raise the level cap to 6. The faction system will be introduced at a later date. They estimate that Early Access will last around a year, depending on the feedback from the community.

Solasta 2 is being developed by Tactical Adventures, an independent development studio based in Paris, France. Founded in 2018, the studio is committed to bringing the tabletop RPG experience to life on screen. Their first commercial game was Solasta: Crown of the Magister. Their second game, Solasta 2, is being developed by a core team of fewer than 40 developers. The game is co-published by Tactical Adventures and Kepler Interactive. Kepler is a video game company and creative studio headquartered in London. They are known for games such as Pacific Drive, Sifu, Rematch and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Later this year, the co-op puzzle adventure Orbitals from Shapefarm for Switch 2, the sci-fi mystery game Ontos from Frictional Games, the vehicle-based action adventure TankRat from Alpha Channel and the narrative adventure PVKK: Planetenverteidigungskanonenkommandant from Bippinbits are set to be released.

Conclusion

In every respect, Solasta II is an improvement on its predecessor. Despite its deep character development and tactical combat system, the game still needs time to mature in the Early Access phase.
