Brenda Romero announced in a social media post that Romero Games' latest game is on the brink of cancellation. The publisher has cancelled funding. The next steps are now being evaluated.

Although Brenda Romero does not name names, US media outlets – citing an employee – assume that the publishing partner is Microsoft. This would indeed be a logical assumption, and not only because of the timing in relation to the current wave of layoffs. Romero Games is the studio of Brenda and John Romero, one of the co-founders and developers of id Software and games such as Doom and Quake. id Software is part of the ZeniMax/Bethesda group, which is being taken over by Microsoft and is affected by the current layoffs.

In the social media post, Brenda Romeo explains that they were surprised to learn that the publishing partner had cancelled the project. She says it was a strategic decision made at the highest level of the partner and far beyond the influence of Romero Games.

"This absolutely isn't a reflection of our team's work, performance, or the quality of the project itself. We hit every milestone on time, every time, consistently received high praise, and easily passed all our internal gates," the post said.

The future of Romero Games remains unclear. According to the company, it is currently considering its next steps to support the team. It has been an extremely difficult day. "If you know of any opportunities or ways you can help our incredible team, please reach out", Romero states.
