Sony: Weaker Console Sales in a Booming Games Market
Despite declining PS5 console sales and mediocre performance of Marvel's Wolverine, Sony's Game & Network Services segment (PlayStation) continues to perform so well that the company has revised its business forecast upwards.
In Q2 of FY2026 (July to September 2026), 2.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles were sold, which is just under 1.4 million fewer than in the same quarter of the previous year (-35%). With a global installed base of 97.9 million units, the PS5 is currently trailing slightly behind the PlayStation 4's sales figures for the same period (103 million). However, boosted by GTA VI and the holiday season, it is likely that the PS5 will pass the 100 million mark in the current quarter.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 software sales totalled 88.2 million units during the three-month period — an increase of 7.9 million, or 10%, from the same period in the previous fiscal year. Of these sales, 8.2 million units were first-party titles, which is 1.9 million more than last year's second quarter. 78% of software sales were full game digital downloads; in Q2 FY2025, this figure was 72%. As of 30 September 2026, there were 127 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network (an increase of eight million).
The company reports that Marvel's Wolverine sold 2.4 million copies within the first 50 days of its release. This puts the game well behind Ghost of Yōtei (2025), which sold over 3.3 million copies in the first 32 days after its release, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023), which sold over 5 million copies in eleven days. Additionally, the release of God of War: Laufey (Sony Santa Monica) has been pushed back from 16 February 2027 to 20 May 2027.
