Gunzilla Games Acquires Game Informer and Finances Its Comeback
There’s a surprising development at Game Informer: the long-running magazine, which ceased publication in August 2024, is making a comeback thanks to a takeover by German-Ukrainian Gunzilla Games.
Few saw it coming: the internationally respected magazine Game Informer is back. Formerly owned by GameStop, the publication had served for decades as a platform for major game reveals. After 33 years in operation, it shut down in August 2024. GameStop, struggling with the decline of physical game sales, had already closed all its German stores permanently in January.
Now the website is live again, and according to the magazine, the full editorial team that was present at the time of closure has returned. In one of the first new articles, Editor-in-Chief Matt Miller explains what led to the revival. Simultaneously, Gunzilla Games issued a press release confirming it has acquired the Game Informer brand and is funding its relaunch.
Gunzilla Games, a German-Ukrainian developer and publisher with offices in Frankfurt, Kyiv, and representation in London, is backing the return. Both parties stress that Game Informer will retain its editorial independence. To support this, the magazine has been spun off into a separate legal entity.
Vlad Korolov, CEO and Co-Founder of Gunzilla Games, stated: "We are proud to welcome the talented voices behind Game Informer into the Gunzilla Games family and join their fight to preserve the heart of video game journalism in what has been a tumultuous time for the industry. With a legacy spanning over 33 years, the publication has had a dedicated readership since its inception and still holds a special place in the hearts of many players across multiple generations – including us."
"Our team was thrilled to hear from the folks at Gunzilla Games about their interest in working with us. They share our belief that the legacy of Game Informer is worth preserving. We can’t wait to continue our mission to celebrate games and the people who make and play them. We’re extremely grateful to Gunzilla Games for their confidence and trust in bringing back 100% of the team and ensuring our coverage remains entirely editorially selected and created," Editor-in-Chief Matt Miller added.
As for what’s next, Miller writes on Game Informer’s website that the immediate focus will be on repopulating the site with content and reconnecting with readers. There are also plans to revive the print edition, likely supported by a subscription and membership model.
